Art Deco color palette leads a partial remodel of an ’80s condo

Location Inglesea Terrace, Burien, WA
Size 582 sqft
Year built 1983, remodeled 2025

This one-bedroom, one-bath condo was built in the 1980s and came with original cabinets and countertops that were still in excellent condition. The owners wanted to preserve these elements while revitalizing the unit to become an appealing rental. The fireplace was another strong visual feature that had to remain, as removal was not permitted by the Association.

The goal was to modernize the space while respecting the original ’80s kitchen, and at the same time introduce a fun, sleek update that would support a happy everyday life for its occupants. An Art Deco–inspired color palette was chosen, along with a design approach characterized by layers and contrast.

A standout update is the dining room chandelier, finished in a bold orange Art Deco color. Its high-contrast hue and metal construction feel luxurious and tie back to the original building’s style, while its clean form (not ornate) keeps it modern.

A deep green color (Benjamin Moore’s Topsoil CC-692 in Flat) was introduced in the bedroom, bathroom, and around the fireplace, adding depth while staying true to the Art Deco palette.

Metal fixtures, including the vanity faucet and door levers, were selected for their sleek lines and slightly industrial feel, complementing the condo’s transitional ’80s character.
